OpenAI Launches GPT-6.1 Terra, a Cheaper Model Built for Computer Use

OpenAI has released GPT-6.1 Terra, a model built for computer use, visual analysis, writing and coding, at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens.

According to the company, Terra completed tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, and scored 15 points above GPT-5.6 Terra on Agents’ Last Exam at medium reasoning effort, at about a third of the cost. OpenAI’s Preparedness Framework rates the model “Critical” for cybersecurity capability, the same rating as GPT-6 Astra.

Why it matters

Cheaper agent-style models lower the cost of automating office work — the kind of tasks where a model operates a computer directly: filling forms, navigating software and chaining steps together. For PC users and small businesses, the interesting number is not the benchmark score but the price: at a third of the cost of the previous generation, agent workflows that were too expensive to run all day start to make sense. The “Critical” cyber rating is the other side of the same coin — capability and risk are rising together, which is why the same week saw the three leading labs announce joint safety coordination.
