OpenAI Plans to Buy Google’s AI Chips, Report Says

OpenAI plans to buy artificial intelligence chips from Google, The Information reported on Tuesday, in a deal that would deepen ties between two companies that compete directly in AI products and search.

The report, citing a person familiar with the matter, did not disclose financial terms. Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment, while OpenAI declined to comment. The plan follows OpenAI’s announcement last week that it would make its frontier AI models available through Google Cloud.

OpenAI is already one of the largest buyers of Nvidia’s graphics processors, which it uses to train and deploy its models. Reuters reported in June 2025 that the ChatGPT maker had begun renting Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). Google’s TPUs have gained traction as an alternative to Nvidia’s market-leading chips as companies look for cheaper options for AI workloads, and Google began selling TPUs directly to some customers this year.

Why it matters

Amazon, Microsoft and Google parent Alphabet plan to spend as much as $600 billion combined this year on AI infrastructure, and investors are increasingly asking when that spending will turn into meaningful returns. A deal that puts Google’s chips inside OpenAI’s training runs would be a strong signal that TPUs have become a serious second source of AI compute — and that even fierce rivals will buy from each other when the hardware is scarce. Alphabet reports its quarterly results later on Wednesday, with investors watching for signs that heavy AI investment is still driving growth in its cloud business.
