Google DeepMind has unveiled Genie 4, a world model that builds an interactive world in real time as the user steers it — generating sound and dialogue along with the scene.
Genie 4 follows earlier world models that could generate video-like environments from a prompt or an image. The new version adds audio: the world it creates can speak and make sound as it unfolds, which brings generated environments much closer to something you could play inside rather than just watch.
Why it matters
World models are one of the fastest-moving areas in AI. The same technology that generates a game world on the fly is also used to train robots and agents in simulated environments before they act in the real world. For PC users, the practical angle is closer than it looks: game development, training simulations and interactive media are the first places this kind of model shows up, and each generation runs on less specialised hardware than the last. The announcement came on the same day OpenAI and Anthropic published AI-written proofs refuting a long-standing maths conjecture — a day that showed off both what AI can build and what it can prove.
